Our Work

Dental Crowns

A crown is a custom-made cap, in the shape of a tooth that is fitted over the existing natural tooth. The purpose of dental crowns is to restore the structure and strength of the damaged tooth, as well as improving the overall appearance.

When Can Crowns Be Used?

A dentist can recommend dental crowning for the following reasons:

  • Preserve the tooth that is weakened due to decay or a large filling.
  • To protect a worn out, fractured or cracked tooth.
  • Improve a tooth’s shape, alignment and shade.
  • To strengthen a tooth after root canal treatment.

What Are Crowns Made Of?

There are four common materials used for making crowns.

  • All Ceramic (Porcelain) Crowns – used for restoring front teeth and recommended by dentists as they are easier to blend with your natural tooth color.
  • Porcelain-fused to metal – This crown is offers an extremely strong restoration as it is connected to a metal structure.  It provides a good seal to prevent decay and leakage.
  • Gold alloys – Crowns comprised of gold, copper and other metals. Provides a strong bond to the tooth, doesn’t fracture, or wear away the tooth it covers.
  • Base metal alloys – This crown contains non-noble metals that are highly resistant to corrosion and durable.

The Procedure

Two appointments are required for dental crowns.

First Appointment: The Preparation

  • Local anaesthesia is administered by the dentist to numb the surrounding gum and tooth.
  • The dentist will shape the outer surfaces of the tooth to make room for the crown.
  • Special dental ‘putty’ is used to take the impression (mould) of your teeth.
  • Onto the prepared tooth, a temporary crown is cemented to protect it while the permanent crown is being created.
  • The impression is sent to the dental laboratory where a technician will prepare the crown. This may take a few weeks.

The Second Appointment: Fitting

  • Local anaesthesia may be administered by the dentist to numb the surrounding gum and tooth.
  • The temporary crown is removed.
  • The dentist will place the new crown, ensuring that it fits correctly and check your bite.
  • After some minor adjustments, the crown is cemented with permanent dental adhesive.

At Dr. Kanowitz, each crown is individually handcrafted to provide a natural and healthy look.

As with any dental restoration, by combining proper dental care at home along with regular hygiene check and clean, will ensure a long lasting crown and smile.
